Ten on Tuesday

Happy Tuesday friends! Things have been super busy these last few days, but thankfully work is slow so I can update! I'm linking up with  Linny's Vault for 10 on Tuesday! Just to let you know, the list of 10 can be about anything...I think. Here we go!

One.
Sunday was Andrew's 24th. He's almost a quarter of a century old! He slept in, came to my house around 2pm, and his parents drove up from Houston. Wanna know what I got him? SKYDIVING TICKETS. Yeah. I'm kinda terrified, but he is super excited and I can't wait!

Left: Andrew and his younger brother Austin. Top Right: Strawberry cake with 24 candles
Bottom Right: Us at Chili's for dinner with some friends
Two.
Speaking of birthdays this past weekend, I have 32196875241657987 friends that have/had their birthday since Thursday. Shoutout to them! Especially Shelby--she's finally 21, Ashley (who turned 24 too), and my sweet cousin Lindsey!

Three.
My allergies are going nuts today. I have no idea what changed, the last few weeks have been bothering everyone and just as everyone is getting better I get worse. I have sneezed at least 17 times today, but who's really counting?

Four.
I am so proud of myself for getting my butt out of bed and actually going to the gym today. I was sleeping so good, and then my alarm went off. I turned it off and rolled over to go back to sleep (after getting up to the bathroom) but I couldn't. So I went to cycling, and it was intense, but apparently I am crazy because after cycling I decided to go to core. My abs are killing me! But I feel good, so it was totally worth it.....and I picked up 2 pounds. Dadgum water weight :(

Five.
Is anyone as excited as me and Linny for Once Upon a Time and Revenge to start on Sunday?!?!?! I was so afraid that I would have to watch them online because I work weeknights, but they have both been moved to Sunday nights! Hooray! This past weekend I got all caught up on Revenge--I missed the last 5 or 6 episodes because of school stuff.

Revenge Season 2 Cast

Six.
Did I mention that I am also super excited about the new season of Dexter?? Too bad I don't get Showtime cause I would totally be watching Dexter instead of Revenge. #sorryimnotsorry

Dexter & Deb's hands are bugging me...so fake and weird looking.
Seven.
This is my last talk about television. I've been watching Breaking Amish on TLC since it started a few weeks ago. Yesterday I found out that it isn't really "true". TLC initially promoted the show as young adults going to NYC for the first time. Things like marriage licenses and divorce decrees and photos have surfaced online, showing that this is not their first time to leave the Amish/Mennonite communities. I'm disappointed that I was misled, but I'm definitely going to keep watching. Besides, isn't 99.9% of television fake in some way?

Eight.
Earlier I mentioned that I was at work. I'm still here--I work at a testing center for the university. There is a phone in the monitoring office where I work, but it never rings unless it is my boss on the intercom. So when it rings I always answer with "Yes ma'am?" Well, the one time when I don't look at the phone before answering is the one time that a test taker calls. And it was an older gentleman. Oops. But he was a good sport about it, and hopefully he will laugh when I explain the story to him!

Nine.
Have y'all heard of Gangnam Style? It's a song, and there are dance moves that go with it. Here's the video:

Why did I show you that video? Because the president of the university danced to the song at Midnight Yell this past weekend and it was AWESOME.

See? Awesome.

Ten.
On Friday, James Lovell is coming to Texas A&M to present an award to an Aerospace Engineering student who's receiving some scholarship. I don't know why, and I don't really care, but I'm thrilled to meet an astronaut!! Don't know who James Lovell is? (I didn't either until I watched Apollo 13). He was played by Tom Hanks in the movie, and has also been on flights including Gemini 7 & 12, and Apollo 8. Pretty freaking awesome. I'm also gonna get his autograph, or try really hard.

Successful first 10 on Tuesday? I think so!...and I thought I was going to run out of stuff to talk about!

Another Reason Why I Love Being an Aggie

Happy Thursday lovelies! Hard to believe another week has almost passed, and I am ready for the weekend! I want to share an article I found earlier this morning from the Aggie Network (yep, I'm a member and I'm also in the Century Club!). Be prepared to shed a few tears for this young man. The story is here or you can read it below! And in case you don't know, Ring Day is pretty much the biggest day in Aggieland, besides Graduation day.

Rich In Spirit
He Couldn’t Afford His Aggie Ring,
But Aggie Spirit Made Up The Balance

Story by Stephanie Jeter Cannon ’06, photography by Patrick Danielczyk ’03, video by Katy Lee ‘08

Daniela Ranz ’13 found a parking spot right outside the packed Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center. With around 3,500 Aggies set to get their Aggie Rings on Sept. 14, and thousands more family members and friends on hand to share in the joy, snagging that empty bit of asphalt affirmed what she’d been feeling for months.

Today was their day.

Daniela and her boyfriend of four years, Esteban Del Valle ’13, along with family and friends, worked their way inside the packed building. When her group was called, they all headed into the Ring delivery room. Ring delivery is organized by last name, but Ranz-with-an-R was leading them to the Zs. Crediting her misdirection to excitement, Esteban tried to redirect their path, but Daniela pretended not to hear.

“Hey, don’t you know the alphabet?” teased one of Ranz’s brothers.

Esteban could tell Daniela was nervous. But that wasn’t unexpected, because this was Aggie Ring Day. The Aggie Ring is a tradition dating back nearly 125 years, and the Ring itself is the most visible symbol of the Aggie Network that connects Aggies around the world. The design of every Aggie Ring is the same, and every symbol on it represents the values Aggies embrace: excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect and selfless service.

The Association of Former Students has the responsibility of protecting the integrity of the Aggie Ring, overseeing eligibility, order and delivery for more than 9,000 students each year. Aggie Ring Day, hosted at the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center, is celebrated three times a year and is one of the most anticipated milestones in an Aggie’s time on campus, a celebration of a significant academic accomplishment.

Earning the right to wear an Aggie Ring requires clearing some of the toughest requirements in the country for a class ring. Daniela had met those requirements, and today she would receive one of the most treasured items any Aggie possesses.

Esteban had met those requirements, too, successfully completing 90 hours toward his degree in industrial engineering. He had been eagerly looking forward to the day he would get his Aggie Ring, and he had the qualifications. He just didn’t have the money.

He’d come to that hard realization months ago. You can’t hope away a bank balance, he said. He was sure he would eventually be able to purchase his own Aggie Ring—someday, at some unknown point in the future. But this was not that day. Today would not be his Aggie Ring Day. Instead, he’d celebrate with Ranz and his other Aggie Classmates, and he’d be happy about it because he knew what a special day it was for them.

He had no idea.

For months, Daniela had been hiding a secret. Unknown to Esteban, she had made special arrangements with the staff of the Aggie Ring Office, and she had reached out to friends and family she thought would want to help. “You understand the tradition of the Aggie Ring,” she wrote to each. “Donate anything. You can be part of this.” Almost immediately, her phone started buzzing. About two dozen people responded. “I’ve had my phone on silent for three months,” she said.

It was still on silent as they made their way into the delivery room and got into that line. And then it was time.

Daniela’s Ring was presented to her by her mother. Three other friends who were celebrating that day were presented with their Rings. And then Daniela’s stepfather, Jim Wuerth, cleared his throat.

“One of the many things about tradition here is the Ring,” Wuerth said. “Another thing about the Aggies is helping friends.”

And then Wuerth extended a box toward Esteban. A maroon box, with the Texas A&M University logo on top. The box that an Aggie Ring comes in.

“People have helped you today,” Wuerth concluded.

What came next, Esteban can’t exactly remember. The next memory he has is looking down, through tears, at his very own Aggie Ring. (Watch the video)

The emotions he experienced aren’t easily explained. “I went blank,” he said. Yes, he had earned the privilege to order his Ring, but this—this generosity, kindness and selflessness—he wasn’t sure he had earned that. It was a monumental gift.

“I went to sleep crying because I was happy,” he said. “I woke up and saw it and started crying because I was happy.”

For Esteban, his Aggie Ring has significance far beyond its value as a piece of gold jewelry.

“No, it has even more meaning that that,” he said. “Every time I look at the Ring, I see the support of my friends and family."

That’s Texas A&M, he said.

"What else can I say? That’s real friends, real tradition.”

The Association of Former Students, established in 1879, is the official alumni organization of Texas A&M University. The Association connects the nearly 500,000 members of the worldwide Aggie Network with each other and the university, and provides more than $7 million a year in impact to university scholarships, awards, activities and enrichment for students, faculty, staff and former students.

Pretty awesome, huh? Thanks & Gig'em and God Bless!

Cats & Dogs

Today has been rough. I'm feeling exhausted, I went to the gym this morning and walked a few miles then lifted some weights and even did some abs! Way to go me!! Anyways, as I was working on my abs I somehow managed to turn my neck the wrong way and definitely strained some muscles! Driving to work today was HELL to turn my neck. So, in order to cheer myself up, I hit up Dog Shaming and Caturday Today for some laughs. I am 100% a dog person, but looking at cats is always fun. Here are some of my favorites!

This one was in a text that my sister sent me this morning. I laughed so hard because it is EXACTLY what my weenies do. EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.
One of my coworker's cat. His name is Linus. He won a smiling contest with this photo on Caturday Today. Isn't he handsome?
I jumped out of a moving car window to go poop in front of hundreds of kids.

Editor’s note: there was definitely some ugly cackling coming from the dog shaming household!!

Yes. Please check out both websites for more laughs!

Finally Finished

It's only taken me 6 months to get through The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest. Whew. Mind you, when I started, the semester was coming to an end and I was getting ready to graduate from college. Since then, I've been working like a crazy woman. Like I had three jobs at one point crazy.

What did I think about it?

It was very slow to start out, the first 100-150 pages seemed to just drrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaggggggggggggg on like it would never end. Then it picked up, and I was able to plow through it these last few weeks with my new job. In case you live under a rock, this book was the third in a trilogy that became popular last Christmas due to the first book making its movie debut--all three books were translated from Swedish to English, and Swedish movies have already been made.

The book picks up at the end of the second book, and Lisbeth is in the hospital and Blomkvist has been arrested. Lisbeth's father, Zalachenko, is also in the same hospital. Blomkvist realizes that his job is to clear Lisbeth's name of everything that has happened, up since 1991. Zalachenko is another problem, which must be solved by the Section, a secret group of Security Police, and they have been responsible for screwing up Lisbeth's life. In the end, Lisbeth goes to court to fight the numerous charges that have been brought against her and regain total control of her life and affairs.

Sounds kinda boring right? It's the little details that make the book!

What's next on my reading list? The Five Love Languages Singles Edition by Gary Chapman. Thanks to Andrew's dad....yay. Three and a half  years of dating and Mr. T still considers me to be single. Ouch. But I'm excited to read it regardless!

Sunday Social

Sunday Social

1. 5 items you can't live without on a daily basis(water, food, shelter, and clothes don't count).

Definitely my iPhone and my laptop, TV (DVR and On-Demand), eyeliner, and my Chi!

2. All time favorite book? Why?

I don't actually think I have an absolute favorite, but I've read all the Harry Potter books at least twice. I'm currently reading The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, and it was a slow start at first but I can't seem to put it down now! And to find new great reads, I use the Goodreads app. Check it out!

3. Something you'd like to accomplish before the end of 2012.
I would love to lose another 10-15 pounds, and it seems like I'm on my way to accomplishing that. If you haven't heard, I've lost a total of 11 pounds since June!

4. If you could go back and relive any year of your life which year would it be?
I'd love to redo my sophomore year of college--fall 2008 to spring 2009 (okay maybe that doesn't count as an actual year, but it works for a school year)

5. What do you wish people knew about you without you having to tell them?

I wish that people would say something smarter than "YOU ARE SO TALL!" I've been this tall for 10 years, it's not new to me. And you sound  just a little bit like an idiot because you're stating the obvious. It's not a huge pet peeve since it happens all the time (I've accepted it and I don't really care) but try to be more entertaining or clever....ask me how tall I am or if I played volleyball/basketball or if I have tall siblings or who in my family is tall. yeah.

Happy Sunday lovelies! ♥

It's OK!

Its Ok Thursdays

Happy Thursday y'all :) I can't believe it's been a month since my last It's OK..oops! If you're here for the first time, welcome to my little slice of pie! Let's jump right in!

It's OK....

that I haven't linked up with Amber & Neely in a month (obvious)

that I didn't go to the A&M vs Florida game this past Saturday

that I spent too much money shopping last weekend....maybe not that much but close to $200

that I did ABSOLUTELY nothing yesterday besides shower/fix my hair and go to my evening job

that I have to start paying my loans in 2 months. yikes.

to be excited about going to the gym today when I get off work

to jump up and down like a crazy lady in the locker room when I found out I have lost 11 POUNDS so far!!

to miss Andrew like crazy. regardless of the fact that we live in the same town, he's so busy with school and I'm busy with my two jobs that I haven't seen him since Sunday

to be obsessed with On-Demand. we don't have a DVR, so it's the next best thing

to be ecstatic about the cooler weather and possible rain coming this week/weekend

to be bummed that I have to miss my friend's wedding because of work

to get a little anxious about Andrew's birthday coming up next weekend...I don't know what I'm getting for him yet!

Wow. Seems like my emotions are all over the place this week. Excitement and disappointment all in a day! Now go link up with Amber & Neely!

Gym FAIL

Remember yesterday how I said I was going to start back at the gym today? Yeah, that totally didn't happen. I set my alarm for 7:30 this morning, and I felt so exhausted that I just decided I would hit it twice as hard tomorrow and just chill out today. And it's a good thing that I did because work has been absolutely crazy today. I opened this morning, and we have had one computer auto-restart no less than 8 times and then we couldn't find some testing paperwork necessary for one person to take their exam. The boss is out sick, so we are on our own. Crazy, right?

I've thought about going to the gym after I get off work at 9:00, but I'm always exhausted afterwards that I go home, shower, and fall into bed. Plus I like group classes better anyways :)  so here's more motivation!

Potentially Exciting News

Happy Sunday blog lovelies! Hope you've all had a fantastic weekend, I know I have! My sister came to visit for the weekend, and we spent all day yesterday shopping. I've been needing new clothes for my job at the assisted living community, and I found a dress, nice top, and 3 pairs of shoes. Yay! Hopefully I will get to take some pictures this week of my new clothes, if I remember.

So in this post, I mentioned that I had some good news, and it's not 100% good news, but I received an email from an Occupational Therapy Assistant school that was encouraging me to apply, and the program starts in January. I do love having my jobs and being in College Station, but more than anything I want to go to OT school. The deadline to apply is September 15, so I hope to hear something in the very near future! I'll be calling them tomorrow to make sure that they have received my application. Keep your fingers crossed and prayers coming my way!

Starting tomorrow, I'll be getting back to the gym, and getting back on track to losing more weight!

Hope y'all had a fantastic weekend!

My Dad

This morning at 6:00am my dad went in for heart surgery, again.

Two and a half years ago he had quintuple bypass surgery and everything seemed to be going well. A few weeks ago my dad went in for a stress test, and failed it. Last Wednesday they went in to see what was wrong, and some of the bypasses hadn't worked properly. On Friday they officially decided that my dad would need surgery again. So the doctors took him in early this morning and put 4 stents in his heart to reopen everything back up.

My dad called me last night just to say hi, and I couldn't help but think that last night could have been the last night I would ever talk to him, or hear me tell him that I love him! It pretty much sucked.

I called my dad around 10:30, and I figured he was probably still in surgery and that it would go to voicemail or another family member/friend would answer. But instead, my dad was the one who answered! He is doing just fine! Surgery did take longer than expected, they were only supposed to put 2 or 3 stents in, but I am glad they did extra! He'll be staying in the hospital tonight, and hopefully he will go home tomorrow. I was going to be there, but I couldn't get off for work on such short notice, plus dad told me not to worrry about it. But I wish I was there right now! Here's a picture via Facebook of him (he looks pretty good if you ask me!!)

I didn't want to tell anyone about it other than my support base, because you never know what could happen. But I'm so glad that my dad is still with us and doing great!

I'm a Blog Star!

Mrs. Monologues

Hi there! I'm Natalie, writer of Beauty & Brains, and welcome to my own little space! I just graduated from college (Texas A&M to be exact, so I bleed maroon) and 4 months ago I had my whole life figured out. And then I didn't get into grad school like I had planned. So what am I doing now? I have two part time jobs, one with the university as a test administrator, and the other as a receptionist for an assisted living community. I love both of them, but I think working with the elderly just might be my specialty!

Why did I choose to stick around this college town rather than going home? You can thank my boyfriend for that. He is graduating in December, then going on to get his Master's degree. Yuck. But we are happier than pigs making mudpies, head over heels, goofy-crazy in love with each other. And I didn't want to be four hours away from him. Plus the job market back home isn't all that great...

Random things about me that all of my bloggers should know (I'm like a broken record sometimes...)

I'm super tall...like 6'4''
I donated a foot of hair in June 2011 and I miss it like crazy but can't seem to get myself to grow it back out.
I have one sister, everybody says we look like twins!
I'm in the process of trying to lose weight. My goal is to get back to 185, as of yesterday I was at 233.
I love bright colors (I'm obsessed)
I HATE shopping for clothes because it is impossible!!!

So yeah. That's me. It may not sound very exciting, but the little moments in life are what I enjoy most! Thanks for stopping by!

Why We Don't Get Labor Day Off

I will NEVER understand why Texas A&M doesn't give us Labor Day off. All the other schools I know of get today off, and the fall semester started last Monday. I don't know why. But I HATE IT. So I'll be leaving for work in about half an hour. Womp womp.

Yesterday afternoon I finally went back to the gym. Yay! I went to Zumba with my friend Chelsea, and at the end of the workout I decided to weigh myself. I figured that I haven't been eating properly and since I haven't been to the gym in a few weeks that I had gained a few more pounds back. Instead, the scale said I was at 233. I nearly fell over. A month without the gym and I lost weight?!?! How did that happen?! Regardless of how, I've lost 9 pounds so far, and it seems like I'm on a good roll!

This week will be slower than what I've grown accustomed to--I'm down to only 2 jobs instead of the usual 3. Hooray! More time to sleep, eat, and blog!

Happy Monday!
